Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine which treats the whole person instead of isolated symptoms. Homeopathy is based on the principle of similars: Similia similibus curentur.
This principle of treating "like with like" is based on the premise that a particular substance produces similar symptoms in a healthy person compared to those experienced by a sick person. Conventional medicine believes that symptoms are caused by the illness, whereas homeopathy sees the symptoms as the body's natural reaction in fighting the illness, and seeks to stimulate the vital force to overcome this process.
The symptoms a person experiences are then used to find a matching remedy. An example of this premise is seen in Allium cepa, the common red onion. Imagine cutting up a fresh onion. The symptoms you are experiencing are tearing eyes and a runny nose similar to an allergy attack due to exposure to pollen etc. Now Allium cepa in a potentized form is used to improve the symptoms. In homeopathy, we use a substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy person and alleviate them in the sick with similar conditions.
Conventional medicine often suppresses an illness. For example, a person is given antibiotics to kill the bacteria. The homeopathic approach is to stimulate the body's own defense system to overcome the illness from inside.
By suppressing an illness, you usually drive the imbalance to deeper levels which can result in the development of a chronic disease. For example, after overuse of antibiotics the intestinal flora can be so out of balance that the person experiences digestive disorders or yeast infections. Homeopathic remedies are safe and have no side effects.
There are three levels of treatment:
Constitutional - (preventative to keep the person healthy) Especially recommended for children
Chronic conditions - Allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, skin diseases, ADHD, tendencies towards chronic infections etc.
Acute conditions - Colds, influenzas, etc.
